School of Dance, Music and Art
At Staten Island Community Center we have provided a dance school that is dedicated to providing the highest quality dance education for girls and boys ages 4-18, as well as for adults. Through the discipline and dedication dance requires, our dance teachers mold and develop healthy, passionate, responsible, and well-rounded individuals. Our dance program draws on the rich traditions of Russian ballet and folk. In addition to teaching all students in classical ballet, our teachers also teach current dances about folk & character dance, modern and popular dance. Our School of Dance was established for youth in our local community that combines dancing program with creativity and prepares girls and boys for success both on and off stage.
Those who participate in music lessons tend to be highly intelligent in the classroom. In a 2009 study published in the journal Psychology in Music, an in-depth experiment found that students that had music in their academic curriculum had significantly better vocabulary sequencing than those who did not. When playing the piano majority of times students have to read as they play. This trains child’s eyes and hands to work closely together (multitasking). Student’s hands also develop independent coordination. Each hand performs entirely different movements and has to learn to work together stimulating multiple parts of the brain. Hand/eye coordination is a very beneficial skill to acquire for it can improve one’s reaction time and productivity.

At Staten Island Community Center our Studio Art Program is designed to teach students lessons of every traditional art school in a style and setting appropriate to the student’s age. Lessons include color theory, composition, visual narrative, observational drawing and painting. We provide the materials and education necessary to create a professional portfolio of artwork as you explore the inspirational work of the masters. Our students also have a chance to learn about their creative process and mimic their techniques while using a variety of materials and techniques as they draw, sculpt, paint and collage. When it comes to teaching Art to our youth members, our teachers focus on how to live, how to develop the imagination and creativity with spiritual understanding in every lesson.
